Although its designer is undocumented, Philadelphia architect Frank Miles Day was credited with a house in Radford in the Builder’s, Decorator’s, and Woodworker’s Guide (August, 1890). Day specialized in the Queen Anne style, thus it was speculated that the Harvey house was his Radford commission. However, more recently obtained information casts doubt on the attribution to Day and suggests that E.G.W. Dietrich (1857-1924), a native of Pittsburgh who relocated to New York City in 1886, was more likely the architect. This extraordinary Queen Anne residence embodies the elegance, craftsmanship, and architectural ambition of America's Gilded Age. Originally constructed for J. K. Dimmick, general manager of the Radford Land Improvement Company, the property was purchased in 1906 by Lewis Harvey, whose family would become closely intertwined with its history for generations. Featuring picturesque rooflines, a sweeping curved veranda, magnificent cherrywood staircase, intricate ornamental woodwork, original windows with historic wavy glass, and exquisite stained-glass panels depicting the Four Seasons, Harvey House remains a remarkable example of nineteenth-century architectural artistry. Its historical and architectural significance was formally recognized in 1976 with its inclusion in both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The remarkable preservation of Harvey House is largely attributable to A. C. Wilson, a direct descendant of the Harvey family, who acquired the residence in 1974 and devoted decades to an extraordinary restoration effort. Guided by a commitment to historical authenticity, Wilson painstakingly researched and recreated original wallpaper patterns, carpeting, exterior paint colors, decorative finishes, and architectural details while undertaking substantial structural improvements and carefully integrating modern mechanical systems. His dedication extended beyond the residence to its historic carriage house, workshop, and surrounding grounds, preserving the property's distinctive architectural character and family legacy. Today, Harvey House represents far more than an exceptional historic residence; it is a tangible connection to Radford's formative years and a testament to generations of stewardship. Now offered to the public at auction, this extraordinary property presents a rare opportunity for a new owner to become part of its remarkable history, preserve an irreplaceable architectural treasure, and write the next chapter in the enduring legacy of Harvey House.
